The MDU is designed as a series of easily configured, rapidly assembled, personally customized residences with the ability to adapt to conditions of site, program, and budget.

The most striking feature of the MDU concept is the vertical wood slat exterior. The form’s inspiration came from the test site ecology, home to a number of large pecan trees. These massive trees bear a fruit which is encased in a hard inner shell and a ephemeral outer shell.  The MDU form can be seen as a direct emulation of the blueprint which nature has provided.

The individual modules inside are configured to allow for maximum programmatic variance, with a service wall located along a long axis. The design allows for multiple season enjoyment of the outdoor spaces, with numerous measures integrated into the design which mitigate the need for significant heating and cooling loads.
